Indefinite Hiatus

Hi everyone, I know this doesn't make up for suddenly abandoning this blog, but I hope you would understand. I owe a lot of things to this blog and to everyone who kept on visiting. Those who truly became avid followers, you guys are insanely awesome! Also, to those who I met through this blog, I am very glad to have engaged and interacted with you. But I guess, all good things will come to an end.. or just an indefinite hiatus.

Through this blog I learned a lot that pushed me to pursue the things I love. I created more things after this blog's inception and little success. I am grateful for what I have experienced through this. Now, I'm moving to new things and another chapter in my life. I hope that the support you gave Astron Sneaker Hunts will also be given to my new concept and website.

I hope to see you lurking around Purveyr soon. For this one, let's see what the future holds.

P.S. You can also follow me personally on Instagram. If ever you do, let me know you're a reader of Astron Sneaker Hunts, that would be wonderful.

Bensimon Press Launch

Last week I was invited at the Bensimon press launch at Enderun. Bensimon is a footwear and apparel brand from France, which is newly available locally through select stores. Media and guests were treated to experience the French way of living; food, ambiance and the brand. After the break is a photo compilation of the said event.

Instagram: My Visual Lifestyle Journal

I rarely promote the blog and its other web profiles, so I hope you will understand when I do this. haha! Besides Facebook and Twitter, I also have an Instagram (@iamAstron) which is more of my personal photo journal. You will see things there that are related to this blog, my brand and other things that I do. I would really appreciate it if you follow me there too. I am fond of taking photos, and this one gives me the ability to take anything and anywhere instantly. Let me share to you my lifestyle through images.

ASH Team Recruitment & Sneaker Hunt Process

I have been doing this blog for almost a year now. My initial goal is to reach at least 1000 sneaker/sneaker wearer features. I'm well aware though that, that goal is still far, but with me being busier with other things, the number of features I have been getting had been fewer. Though I haven't been getting a lot of features lately, I'm trying as much as I can to put out content on a daily basis as you can see. Adding two segments to the blog; Threesome and Wares, has helped me keep up. However, I still feel I need to put out more features per month. This has gotten me to fabricate a new system for the blog. Since I really don't travel a lot and I get a good number of visitors from different countries. Having most features from Manila, Philippines won't give the blog's readers justice. As much as I want to do all content and output myself, it would be inadvisable, it will just prevent the blog to grow to its potential.

So, here's how I'm going about it. I will be needing contributors from different places around the world.  Only one contributor/team member per city. Contributors will be expected to give at least one feature per month. I will only require two things for a person to qualify as a contributor; any camera that produces high resolution photos and a set of photos (portfolio or blog) taken by himself. For other details of contributor work and other stuff, that will be discussed privately through email.

What will you get if you become a contributor?

Contributors' names and links will be put in all the content they submit for the blog. They will also be included in the team page in the blog that will be created once the set of contributors are complete. And, hopefully, get good experience, new knowledge and skills by becoming one. I'll try my best to give tips and share my knowledge with you guys.

You can send me an email at if you want to apply as a contributor. Put ASH Team as the subject of your email. Then include all these infos:

Full Name | City & Country you're currently living in | Age | Occupation | Link for your photos/portfolio | Photo of yourself

I will not accept any applications from the Philippines as of now.

And since I have these photos of me sneaker hunting, I'll also share to you guys how I do it. There are actually four steps on how I do it, (as if it is very hard) They are Prospecting, Approach, Feature and Associate.

I people-watch. Most of the I'm time looking at their feet, however, of course I look at the person too. A lot of people think that this is only a sneaker blog, but another thing that's important here is how the wearer dresses himself up, how he looks particularly. The sentence above with the header tells it all. This is a blog about the contemporary sneaker-driven style of people. That's why sometimes I let good sneakers pass, because most of the time the person wearing them looks boring (no offense, but a little effort could go a long way). But, that does not mean I only feature those who are stylish, it really depends. Let's just say what catches my eye will most likely be a prospect for a feature. My personal taste, in other words.

This has got to be the hardest. I'm particularly a shy guy and approaching random people is no joke. I remember, on the very first day I did the hunt, I passed on a lot of potential features because I just did not have the courage to approach them. But as the blog grew older, I got used to it. Being rejected a lot of times definitely trained me to easily shrug off rejections. It made me learn to just go up to a person and talk to him randomly. First words I say? "Excuse me, is it alright if I take a few photos of you?" And then I'll explain it further while in the conversation.

When they say yes, that awkward feeling I got when I approached them are now transferred to them. I'm just thankful that these people I feature are alright in posing in public. I personally think it is awkward to pose in front of the camera in public, unless you are a professional model or someone who would love to be a model. As you can see in features I get, there are three angles, one full body and two angles of their shoes. It takes around 3-5 minutes to shoot it all. It's like we just bumped into each other, talked for a while and parted ways in a jiffy.

Lastly, I will tell them that I will be posting it soon in my blog. Then give my card to them, or if ever I don't have any card with me, I'll ask them if they want to see it. If they do, I will ask them for paper and pen or their phones for me to give them the URL. This is a vital part of the process since you don't want them looking for their photos blindly in the internet universe. I treat this as my thank you to them, to easily find themselves featured in the blog.

A person below asked a good question that I forgot to explain. The question was about how do I find the model names of each of the sneakers that I feature. A very important part of the blog too that I completely missed, and I apologize for that.

So how do I do it? I am no sneaker expert, that's for sure, and maybe even some of you guys who visit this blog have more knowledge than me. But during the several months that I have been doing this, my knowledge grew exponentially. From knowing just brands, now I know a little more. But in searching for names I usually go about it in this order;

  • If I know the model name, most of the time I still search for it to get its exact colorway or its other possible nicknames.
  • If I don't know its exact model name, I'll search it either by its type and what it looks like, "Nike Air Black/Red" or "Adidas High Blue/White" etc.
  • Usually, I use the image search of Google.
  • If I still can't find it there, I go to brands' respective websites and try to look for the model there.
  • Also, of course I look at sneaker blogs. The most helpful and blogs/websites I trust are Nice Kicks, Sneakernews, Sneakerpedia (probably the website that gives me the hardest time, but sometimes they have that one particular pair that everybody else does not have), Sneaker Freaker and Kicksonfire. There are other ones I have visited for infos too, but the ones mentioned are the ones I frequent.
  • Lastly, if I really can't find it anywhere, I resort in either asking you guys and some friends for help or just go and put its brand as its title.

And since I really don't know everything about sneakers, I may have named some models wrong because of wrong sources, outdated ones or I have mistaken a model for another one. Whatever the reason is, I hate naming models wrong, but it is inevitable. So I turn to you guys again, if you know more about a pair than me, don't hesitate to correct me. I'll gladly change it once the correction is proven right. If you have any other questions about the process, don't be shy to ask. You can comment on this post or email me.

A Journey In The City: Urban Tripper

I'm guessing you know by now that besides this blog, I am also running a lifestyle brand called Chief. We released our second collection film last week, A Journey In The City: Urban Tripper. The film is about exploring a city, preferably your city first. There are probably hundreds of different cities that each of us want to visit. Las Vegas, New York, Tokyo, Paris and London are just a few popular ones, but have you truly traveled around your own city already? Most of the time, locals are the ones who haven't toured around their own city. It's actually a shame. Every place, every experience is something to learn from. Journey in your city, play the part, be an Urban Tripper.

Vans Vault at Sole Academy

Last Friday, Sole Academy celebrated the adoption of their newest family member, the Vans Vault collection. I was lucky enough to be invited and cover it. Though rain poured hard enough to soak people up, the event did all the event-goers a favor. Their warm welcome, great food and amazing product compensated for any Friday stress one could've experienced. Check out their Vault collection as soon as you can, stocks won't last long, I'm sure.

Stupid Format Button

Again, I accidentally erased photos of features I took. Damn! I think I erased two features. I'm really sorry for those two whom I approached but unfortunately won't be featured in the blog. I hope I can see you again next time and finally do a feature on you that I will get to post. I usually don't erase everything in my camera unless it's almost full, and today was the day I had to format it. Stupidly, I forgot that I haven't copied the feature photos to my laptop yet, so I unmindfully clicked the format button and erased all of it. I apologize. Hopefully, I won't commit another mistake again in all of the future features.

"Works For Kicks" - Astron x Groupe De Ville Raglan

To those who didn't get to grab their's due to geographical differences, Groupe is shipping nationwide. Get yours now while sizes are still available. It's priced at 600 a piece. A great top for the arriving (arrived) cool weather (locally). Order here!

Astron Productions: Left A Legacy

As a struggling almost mid-twenty who tries his best to survive without having to work a day job under a company, I try to look for opportunities from the passions I have. Another one besides blogging is, that I am really hooked on producing photographs and film. If you have seen on the side bar, there's a link going to my other upcoming blog, Astron Productions. It is an event/party photo and video blog. In this endeavor, I pursue something that I find really fun, which also helps me to get by somehow.

Check out the latest film I released, Left A Legacy.

This was shot at the Adidas' event at Skye Lounge & Bar featuring DJ Neil Armstrong and sets by Ms. Badkiss and Nix Damn P.

Vote For IDYSM!

My buddy Lester is nominated in Pedestrian TV's Blogster Awards with his blog I Dig Your Sole Man. You might've seen him around the blog, in my about page and being in the latest Sneaker Junkies feature. He's been running the blog since 2009, and his dedication in featuring people wearing sneakers is admirable because he makes sure to talk and converse with them. It's like you're knowing the wearer by just reading his posts. Vote for him, help him out. He's worthy of the award.

Interesting and Exciting Shoes

Spot this pair! I saw this when I was in Universal Studios in Singapore. The sneakers are worn by a lot of middle aged women. I'm guessing they're in one tour/bus because most of them are wearing the same tops. I'll give them a benefit of the doubt though, that the shoes are very comfortable. The actual only reason I can think of for someone to wear them. How about you, can you rock them if ever they come with a men's design? As the words say on the shoe, it's Interesting & Exciting.

P.S. I also really dislike the other shoes/sandals on top, the my-toes-are-special shoes.

To those who were approached and told that they will be featured in the blog, but have not seen their feature yet. Most features take a little while before it gets posted. While very few, unfortunately, accidentally gets lost (the original photos), and the owner is greatly sorry for that. It is definitely not intended.

To Singapore

Just recently received my new set of cards. Ready to conquer Singapore tomorrow. I'm expecting to get a lot of heat there, most especially because its one of the renowned sneaker countries in the world. See y'all sneakerheads out there!

Astron in Action

Taken by my friend from her phone, this is actually my very first photo while sneaker hunting. Well, a part of how I sneaker hunt. What you don't see there that are part of my routine are long walks around the place, head down most of the time, waiting, approaching (sometimes chasing) and uttering the words "Hey, do you mind if I take a photo of you? It's for my sneaker blog." a lot of the time to surprised passers-by. It's actually not easy to spot some worthy sneaker wearers, because besides looking at sneakers I also check out the person's style. I particularly don't like featuring wearers that are too laid back in terms of style, unless they are wearing something really rare. I find it really boring, just my opinion. On the other hand, you'll get more chance of getting featured if you're wearing alright sneakers paired up with good or different sense of style. (Explains why I take a full body shot of each one.)

Chief Clothing

If you're wondering what I do for a living, the answer isn't this blog. This blog is all passion. I'm not expecting any returns from this, but I'd be very appreciative if I did receive any. So in other words, what I do to earn something is, I'm currently running this start-up menswear brand called Chief. The video above is a teaser of it's very first short film and collection. I'm hoping you could help me spread the word about the upcoming video, that's just, if you're willing.

Here's the background of the brand by the way,

"Chief is an independent men’s lifestyle clothing brand that rooted from being a specialized vintage shop in 2011. The development of the brand is caused by the owner’s commitment to a lifestyle. A lifestyle he wanted to share, a lifestyle the brand embodies today.

It is the way of living where one values the importance of living life. While in the course of life, we all do acts, and an act is influenced by information. Without information, a person will not know where to start. That’s our mission, to inform and influence that there is more to one’s cycle of life, to encourage the informed to do something, and to create a society that is open-minded, liberal and entirely experienced. No one can really quantify all the things we can experience in this world, but one can make the most of what he is capable of experiencing.

In a way to promote the idea of the lifestyle, Chief embraces a fascinating style of art, film. Like our films, we also create clothing with classic construction, casual-inspired aesthetic and great-detailed quality, that expresses the same ideologies. The clothing is the tangible representation of the lifestyle, an extension of a wearer’s ideology and principle. On the other hand, the films are our instruments to inspire and influence, which manifest our philosophy. To live.. and

It's something I've been working on since last year. So any support or help will be appreciated! Thanks!

Saturday Release

Last Saturday, with Groupe de Ville we released our collaboration shirt (raglan) at UNSCHLD's flagship store. To those who dropped by and bought, thank you so much! The shirt is still available, drop by the store and get some for yourself.

If you haven't heard about it, I also gave away this pair as a raffle.

Here are the guys who won the free pairs of Vans sneakers. Hope you guys enjoy your free kicks!

This guy was so lucky, he went there just to buy a shirt, but took home a shirt and a pair of Vans Vault.
This guy bought two shirts, one for him and her sister. I guess her sister was more lucky.

Special thanks to Cmart for bringing the beats at our release. Follow him on twitter!

I have a few more pairs to giveaway, I'll announce how you can win it soon. Again, thank you to all who bought and are planning to buy the shirt.

First Year

Hey guys! It's been a while since I wrote something here. Just wanted to let you all know that this is my anniversary month, and I'll be giving away some stuff soon. Also, I have a collaboration shirt with Groupe De Ville that will be released by this month. Stay tuned!

The 2011

2011 is the birth year of Astron Sneaker Hunts, and my initial aim for sneaker features is 1000 pairs. After almost a year I'm almost 1/3 into my goal. And from just around 10-20 people visiting my blog daily, it reached heights I never thought it would. 2011 was really amazing, met a lot of new people and inspired some. By the way, thank you to all those nice people who agreed on taking photos of them in public, even if I know too that it is kind of awkward posing in front of the camera with lots of people around. Without you guys, my blog would not be possible. And of course to those who keep on visiting my blog from the time they knew about it, until this very moment, a lot of thank you's to all of you!

A lot has happened during the year, a lot of changes and experiences. Here are some of the notable memories from the blog;

The very first sneakers I featured and took a photo of. If you remember, this particular set doesn't have the person's full body shot. He was shy, but I couldn't let a quirky sneakers pass as my very first post so I decided to continue with it. I think I haven't shared this yet or if I did, I can't really remember, this blog is not just about the sneakers, it is also about different styles of people on how they wear their sneakers. However, in some circumstances like this (photo on top), if I like the shoes too much, I'd give exceptions. Besides, the blog is not named "Astron Sneaker Hunts" for no reason.

Do you know that the first eight posts have the locations of where I shot them? This post above is the very first one where I abandoned the idea of putting the places in the features.

Another change in the layout of the features happened around October again. Where I now use a uniform font, placing of the number and model name of the sneakers, plus my logo on every feature. I think I'll go with this for a while until I change my mind again and tweak it.. or not.

Middle of the year I started giving out stuff in the blog. Clavel Sneaker Magazine became the blog's partner and we gave away four issues in the blog. Other stuff that I gave to readers and visitors were Sole Slam Manila (Sneaker Convention) passes, blog stickers, Vans stickers, Vans Fashion Week invites and Converse All Star Lo - Ox Leather. I really like giving away stuff, I do every time I have the chance. So expect more free goods this year, 2012.

The birth of Sneaker Junkies, a segment of the blog where I feature sneaker enthusiasts that I particularly find interesting. I aim to post one per month, but sometimes it's really hard to get people to do the feature, so I just post whenever I have someone to feature. The very first one is the band Radical Something. Cool guys from California doing there thing. In my opinion they're going to be big in the near future, watch out. And the second one I featured is working for Vans U.S., Chris Duran. I met him when he contacted me about the blog, and he featured it at the Vans OTW site (Peep This Blog: Astron Sneaker Hunts), another best of 2011 for the blog.

Lastly, here are my top 20 favorite featured sneakers. It's really hard to choose 20 among 256 pairs, it took me quite a long time to decide, but here's my best of the best.

In no particular ranking order here are my top 20 picks;

How about you, what's your top 20? Actually, let's make this a little game, the first one who can include my next 10 favorite pairs in their top 20 will get a set of Astron Sneaker Hunts stickers. Just comment your list here in this post. Have a great New Year guys!

Wife of a Sneakerhead

Happy birthday Sean!

Last week, the wife of Sean contacted me and requested me to do a blog post for her husband on his birthday. Though I don't and won't usually do this on my blog, I found it really sweet for her to request something like this. Not only that she understands the sneakerhead addiction but also she saw my blog as somewhat important for her husband, and I'm really grateful for that. Thank you Larah! I hope you guys stay happy! Enjoy the day!
